FET College Dhúlaigh Talent Behind New RTÉ Kids Series “The Grumpy Onion”

FET College Dhúlaigh Talent Behind New RTÉ Kids Series “The Grumpy Onion”

A brand-new Irish animated comedy series, “The Grumpy Onion”, launches on RTÉ Kids and the RTÉ Player on 16 June 2026 — and it has strong connections to FET College Dhúlaigh staff and graduates throughout its creative team.

Aimed at children aged 7+, The Grumpy Onion follows an ambitious Dublin onion determined to become an online superstar on “VegTube.” Whether he is attempting cooking videos, gaming streams, unboxings or viral trends, his plans rarely go smoothly — his grumpy personality always gets in the way, leading to hilarious chaos in each of the 12 short episodes. The series offers a playful and cheeky take on the world of TikTok, Instagram and YouTube influencers.

Set in a lively Dublin apartment block, the series features a colourful cast of vegetable neighbours including online sensation Tricky Tomato from Tunisia, the eager Curious Cabbage, Limber Leek from Lagos — a Veggielympics champion and dance star — and the ever-reliable Postato delivery veg.

The series is available in both English and Irish on RTÉ Kids TV and the RTÉ Player. Actor David Pearse voices the Grumpy Onion in English, while Marcus Lamb and Gráinne Bleasdale lead the Irish-language cast.

FET College Dhúlaigh is especially proud to see so many former staff members and graduates involved in the production. The original idea, character designs and direction come from former teacher Paul McGrath. Media teacher Leticia Agudo (currently on career break) co-wrote and produced the series alongside Film HND graduate Bobby Moloney. Recent Animation BA graduate Luke Greene worked on scene preparation, while former Media graduate Keith Alexander took on sound design, foley and sound mixing duties.

The catchy soundtrack was created by Richard Egan from Rarn Studio.

The Grumpy Onion is a fully Irish-owned production developed with the support of RTÉ, Fís Éireann, Coimisiún na Meán and the Government of Ireland’s film industry incentives. Additional training opportunities during production were supported through Animation Ireland’s National Talent Academy.

To celebrate the launch, the creators are hosting a live screening event at Light House Cinema on Wednesday, 17 June from 11am–1pm. Families interested in attending can contact Leticia Agudo at [email protected]

As The Onion himself would say:
“Like, share, whatever!”

Performing Arts Showcase “Space Between Songs”

The Performing Arts Department at FET College Dhúlaigh delivered their showcase “Space Between Songs” recently in the Sean O’Casey Theatre, East Wall, highlighting the creativity, talent and collaboration of students across the programme.

Presented by the college Dry Ice Theatre Company, the performances provided an evening where big stories unfolded ten minutes at a time. Each short play created a vivid, self-contained world filled with humour, tension, surprises, and moments of truth. The fast-paced format kept the audience captivated throughout, with every piece offering something fresh and memorable.

This year’s event was notable as second-year theatre performance and production students stepped into the role of directors, guiding first-year performers in bringing a series of dynamic short plays to life. Their leadership and artistic vision were evident in every scene, resulting in confident, engaging performances from the first-year cast.

Students performed mini musical mash-ups that showcased their versatility, stage presence, and creativity. These lively performances brought an additional layer of excitement to an already dynamic evening. The show opened with high energy and maintained its momentum throughout, culminating in well-deserved standing ovations.

Applications for performing arts and more than 70 other courses beginning in September are now open at www.dhulaigh.ie.

Dhúlaigh Animation Collaboration with RTÉKids

Animation students at City of Dublin FET College, Dhúlaigh have been working in collaboration with RTÉKids to create engaging visuals for a range of popular podcasts.

Through this partnership, students gained valuable hands-on experience producing animations for podcasts such as Storytime Takeover, Nero’s Class, Galaxyfest and Kozy Moles. The project offered students the opportunity to work with a real client while developing creative solutions to bring audio content to life visually, particularly for use across social media platforms.

Head of Podcasts for RTÉ Kids, Nicky Coghlan, praised the collaboration, saying:

“We have been very lucky to collaborate with the animation course in Dhúlaigh since 2019 and it’s been a very fruitful partnership. For the students, having a project with a client makes all the difference in bridging the gap between college and work. One of the challenges we face is visualising our podcasts, especially in a way that engages audiences on social media. The HND and BA students on Dhúlaigh’s animation course have crafted wonderful, dynamic visuals that bring our audio to life in a different way. We benefit by getting these lovely animations, and the students are delighted for the exposure and a credit with the national broadcaster.”

Well done to all students and staff involved in this successful project. Check out RTÉ KIDS to see the podcast projects in action.
