We are delighted to congratulate students from FET College Dhúlaigh who have been nominated for the National Student Media Awards (Smedias) 2026.

Film & TV Production BA student Joel Zeiser has been nominated in the Film Documentary of the Year category for his work “Mjolnir”, which is set to screen at festivals later this summer. Joel’s documentary is shortlisted alongside entries from IADT and Griffith College. Mjolnir documents the journey of an Irish mountain biker whom after a near-fatal accident ended his riding career, transformed his setback into a worldwide open-source project, demonstrating that falling down can lead to discovering a new path forward.

The Creative Writing Class of ’25 publication The Quill – Creative Chaos” has been nominated in the Magazine of the Year category, competing with student publications from Dublin City University, University of Limerick, and Technological University Dublin. Read or listen to The Quill here here

Animation BA student Rachel Ogunbowale has received a nomination in the Film Script of the Year category for her script “Bite Back.” The story follows a secondary school girl who becomes obsessed with achieving the perfect teeth — and is willing to do anything to get them, including experimenting with modified chewing gum. Rachel’s script is shortlisted alongside entries from Trinity College Dublin and Technological University Dublin.

Media Department Head Dave Curran said: “We are so proud of these students whose work is competing at such a high level. Our courses aim to help students realise their vocational ambitions through practical work and skills, and we are delighted to see our students being recognised at a national level.”

The Smedias are an annual awards ceremony celebrating the very best in Irish student media and are widely regarded as the student version of the Oscars in Ireland. This year’s ceremony takes place on Wednesday 29th April at the The Burlington Hotel, and we will be cheering on all of our student nominees.

Congratulations and best of luck to everyone involved.
