Cetificate in Horticulture QQI Level 5 (5m2586)
This part-time course delivered over two years is designed to incorporate both the theoretical and practical aspects of horticulture. Our course looks at production and amenity horticulture and includes elements of design, sustainability and commercial awareness. The aim of this award is programme is to enable the learner carry out horticulture operations independently under direction in a range of fields. The award will also enable learners to prepare for progression to a horticultural specialisation at level 6.

Course Content
Student will attend college 2 days a week and approx. 1 day should be given to work practice.
Modules Year One:
Plant Identification and Use
Fruit and Vegetable Production
Soil Science and Growing Media
Health and Safety at Work – 5N1794
Work Practice (completed over the two years)
Modules Year Two:
Plant Science
Plant Propagation
Plant Protection
Communications
Work Practice (completed over the two years)
Certification
On completion of the two years, learners will achieve a QQI Level 5 Major Certificate in Horticulture (5M2586).
Progression
Students may progress to a full Level 6, and higher awards, in several institutes, such as The National Botanic Gardens. Students may also move forward by undertaking various short niche programmes which are designed to facilitate specialisation in a variety of areas, such as market gardening, organic horticulture, soil management, etc.
Career Opportunities
This course will equip students with the skills to engage in various areas of horticulture including nursery work/garden centres, grounds maintenance, community projects, fresh food production, landscaping, urban farming. Social and therapeutic horticulture is another expanding area of interest.

Applicants in receipt of a Social Welfare payment will keep their payment whilst studying on the course under the Back to Education Allowance scheme.
