This course introduces students to the vibrant, creative, and fast-paced world of fashion design. It provides a strong foundation in both the creative and technical aspects of fashion, promoting an awareness of current industry trends, sustainability, and the importance of effective visual presentation and communication.

Students will learn how to research ideas, develop design concepts, and transform their inspiration into finished garments. The course emphasizes the development of a personal design style while encouraging experimentation and innovation.

Learning Environment

Students have access to fashion studios and workshops, equipped with industry-standard manufacturing machinery. Students are supported by a team of experienced tutors and visiting contemporary designers, who provide guidance and insight into current professional practice.

Throughout the year, students will build a portfolio of design work showcasing their creative and technical development — an essential step toward progression to Year 2 or advanced study in the field.

Course Content – Year 1

  • Fashion Industry Practice Studies: Introduction to the structure and workings of the global fashion industry.
  • Design Skills: Exploration of creative processes, and concept development.
  • Combined Materials: Experimentation with fabrics, textures, and surface decoration techniques.
  • Pattern Drafting: Fundamental pattern making and garment fitting skills.
  • Garment Construction: Sewing and finishing techniques for creating professional-quality garments.
  • Communications: Building presentation, teamwork, and visual communication skills.
  • Work Experience: Practical insight into the day-to-day operations of the fashion industry.
  • Drawing: Development of observational, fashion figure, and technical drawing techniques.

Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate or Leaving Certificate Applied.

Mature students are welcome to apply.

All applicants will meet with a member of the fashion team to discuss their suitability for the course. You will be contacted with details of the meeting date, time, and location.

Applicants must present a small sample of creative work to demonstrate their artistic ability and interest.

Examples of creative work include:
Drawings/Sculpture/Collage/3D Work/Sewing Samples/Technical Drawings/ Poster Design /Photography

Progression

Graduates of this course can progress to the Fashion Design QQI Level 6 program at the college or apply to third-level art and design colleges through the CAO
